Peter Brown Construction delivers fast tracked project to help University meet growing needs
FSU General Classroom Building
The Challenge:
Due to increased enrollment at the university, FSU had an overwhelming need for more classroom space. Because of this growth in student population, the project was fast tracked in order to be completed for the 2007 spring semester. Departments at FSU began scheduling classes two semesters in advance, which made it essential for the project to be completed on time. The consequence for not completing on schedule would result in classes being cancelled and students not being able to graduate on time. Adding to this challenge was the fact that the site of the new classroom building is situated in the center of the closed campus. It also is encircled by the Student Union, the Health Center, and the busiest student walkway on campus.
The Solution:
From the day that Peter R. Brown Construction, Inc. was selected to build; the project team began preparing a construction plan to meet the University’s goals. In order to develop this plan the project team interacted closely with FSU and the architect, Gould Evans. To ensure this project would meet the time constraints Peter Brown designed a detailed schedule of construction activities, from the big picture right down to the daily activities that were coordinated with the FSU class schedule. In addition to that, Peter Brown’s ability as Construction Manager to self perform some of the critical areas of the project was part of the reason this project was completed on time.
The Results:
With the completion of the FSU Classroom Building the University now has the potential of moving over 50,000 students through its classrooms on a weekly basis. Not only was the FSU Classroom Building open for the first day of spring class in 2007, but at substantial completion, FSU was able to occupy. The FSU Classroom Building, with all its spaces dedicated to classrooms is one of only about five of its kind nationwide. This project includes a large auditorium/lecture hall space, including two 350 and one 500 seat auditorium, large and small classrooms, computer labs, student waiting areas, and other associated support spaces totaling 100,000 s.f. Through quality and timely construction, the new (HCB) Huge Classroom Building has the potential of projecting FSU forward well into the 21st century.
